Sleep disorders are a group of conditions that affect the ability to sleep well on a regular basis. On this Sleep Awareness Week in March 2021, Dr. Vaseem Choudhary gives brief information about sleep Disorders.

TYPES OF SLEEP Disorders:

1. Insomnia:

Difficulty falling asleep or remaining awake the whole night

2. Sleep apnoea:

Abnormal patterns of breathing when you sleep causing less sleep

3. Hypersomnia:

A person has trouble staying awake during the day

4. Parasomnia:

Disruptive sleep disorders that can arouse from REM sleep, include nightmares, night terrors, sleepwalking

5. Restless leg syndrome:

Uncontrolled sensation and urge to move the leg when you fall asleep

6. Narcolepsy:

Extreme sleepiness during the day and falling asleep suddenly during the day

CAUSES OF SLEEP DISORDERS:

There are many diseases that cause sleep disturbances such as:

  • Allergic respiratory infections
  • Frequent urination
  • Any chronic pain
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Medical illness
  • Medications
  • Hormonal imbalances

SYMPTOMS

  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • Daytime fatigue
  • Urge for taking short naps in the day time
  • Unusual breathing patterns
  • Movement of 1 arm or 1 leg or fingers while falling asleep
  • Irritability
  • Anxiety
  • Lack of concentration
  • Depression
  • Weight gain
  • Dark circles
  • Drowsiness with blurred vision
  • Headache

  DIAGNOSIS

  • A detailed history of the patient
  • Polysomnography
  • Electroencephalogram
  • Multiple sleep latency tests

PREVENTION:

  • Lifestyle changes
  • Limiting caffeine intake
  • Reducing alcohol
  • Eating small low carbohydrate meal before bedtime
  • Maintaining weight
  • Following sleep pattern
  • Regular exercise

HOMEOPATHIC MANAGEMENT:

  • Coffea cruda:

This remedy relieves sleeplessness with worries, overactive thoughts, and hypersensitivity to pain, person is so sensitive that even the slightest noise can wake him up from deep sleep which might further cause insomnia, mentally patient is anguish with weeping tendency sentimental ecstasy

  • Arsenic Album:

This remedy acts best in patients who are anxious and compulsive of small details and not able to sleep if they feel everything is not in place, they are often exhausted yet are physically and mentally restless, if at all they try to sleep they get dreams full of fear and lead to insomnia

  • Ignatia:

Insomnia due to emotional stress, grief, disappointment may call for this remedy, the person is nervous and sensitive and may often sigh and yawn in the day time, a person tries to fall asleep arms and legs begin to twitch, the patient can get an only short nap of sleep

  • Lycopodium:

People who require this remedy does not have any dreams and often doubt that they might have slept, insomnia occurs because of worry and lack of confidence, patient also complaints that there is the loss of sleep due to digestive problems such as gaseous disturbances, person feels drowsy after meals but has troubles sleeping at bedtime ravenous hunger is also seen in patients due to which patient wakes up in the midnight and so there is the loss of sleep

  • Zincum metallicum:

Insomnia due to mental activity is a peculiar feature of this remedy, due to overwork person may become a nervous and tired person is always restless and cannot lie still on the bed which also causes insomnia, due to insomnia there is fatigue, tiredness, and unusual breathing pattern, a person feels sleepy in the day time
