Wheat vs. Multigrain: The Best Roti for Your Child’s Gut Health

Wheat vs. Multigrain

By Dr. Vaseem Choudhary Homeopathic Consultant & Autism Expert

As a homeopath practicing in India for years, I have sat across from thousands of worried parents. One question comes up more than any other: “Doctor, what should I feed him? He only wants to eat rotis and biscuits.”

In India, wheat (Gehu) is our staple. It is hard to imagine a meal without a hot chapati. But for children with autism, conventional wheat flour can sometimes act as a “brain fog” trigger due to high gluten content and difficult-to-digest proteins. The gut-brain connection is real—when the tummy is upset, the behavior often follows.

Today, I want to share a simple but powerful change you can make in your kitchen: Switching from plain wheat atta to a Nutrient-Dense Multigrain Atta.

Why Conventional Wheat Can Be a Problem

Modern wheat is often highly processed and high in gluten. In many children on the autism spectrum, the gut lining is sensitive (“leaky gut”). Gluten can cause inflammation here, which may lead to:

  • Hyperactivity and restlessness.
  • Constipation or irregular bowels.
  • “Brain fog” or lack of focus.

The Solution: The “Spectrum-Friendly” Multigrain Mix

We don’t want to stop rotis; we want to make them smarter. By using a mix of ancient Indian grains, we lower the gluten load and increase the fiber, minerals, and vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Here is my recommended “3-2-1 Ratio” for preparing this atta at home. This mix is rich in Magnesium and B-Vitamins, which are crucial for speech and calming hyper behavior.

The Ingredients (The Golden Ratio)

Instead of buying packet multigrain atta (which often still has 80% wheat), I recommend you make your own mix at the local chakki (flour mill).

  • 3 Kgs Sorghum (Jowar)

Excellent for digestion and cooling for the body.

  • 2 Kgs Finger Millet (Ragi/Nachni)

The powerhouse of Calcium (essential for growing bones and calming the brain).

  • 1 Kg Pearl Millet (Bajra)

High in iron and energy (use less in very hot summers).

  • 500g Split Chickpeas (Chana Dal/Besan) or Soya

For protein, to sustain energy levels and prevent sugar crashes.

  • (Optional) 500g Amaranth (Rajgira)

    great for brain development.

How to Prepare Soft Multigrain Rotis (The Secret Technique)

The biggest complaint I hear is, “Doctor, multigrain rotis become hard like papad!” Because this flour has less gluten, it doesn’t bind as easily as wheat. Here is the trick I teach all my patients:

  1. Boil the Water: Do not use cold water to knead. Boil water and add a pinch of salt and a teaspoon of ghee to it.
  2. The “Ukad” Method: Pour the boiling water over the flour in a bowl. Mix it with a spoon (it will be hot!). Cover it with a plate and let it “steam” for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Knead Well: Once it is warm enough to touch, knead it thoroughly. The heat gelatinizes the starches, making the dough soft and pliable.
  4. Roll and Roast: Roll it out (you may need a little dry flour) and roast on a tawa like a normal chapati.

The Benefits You Will Notice

If you stick to this diet for 4-6 weeks, here is what we clinically observe in children:

  1. Better Bowel Movements: The high fiber content from Ragi and Jowar resolves chronic constipation, which is very common in autism.
  2. Stable Energy Levels: Unlike wheat which gives a sugar spike (making the child hyper) and then a crash (making them cranky), these complex carbs release energy slowly. This helps in sustaining attention during therapy sessions.
  3. Reduction in “Stimming”: A happier gut often leads to a calmer nervous system, which can reduce repetitive behaviors.
  4. Improved Sleep: Jowar and warm milk (or almond milk) at night is a traditional remedy for better sleep.

A Note for Parents

Changing a child’s diet is not easy, especially with sensory issues. Do not force it overnight. Start by mixing 50% of this new flour with 50% of your regular wheat flour. Slowly increase the quantity of the multigrain week by week.

Food is the first medicine. By changing the atta in your dabba, you are taking a massive step toward your child’s healing.

Benefits at a Glance:

  • Better Sleep: Thanks to Jowar and warm milk.
  • Calmer Gut: Fibers from Ragi resolve constipation.
  • Focus: Steady energy release prevents hyperactive spikes.
