What is Colorado Tick Fever? 

Colorado Tick Fever is a viral infection spread to humans through the bite of an infected Rocky Mountain wood tick

Causes 

Colorado Tick Fever is induced by the Colorado Tick Fever Virus (CTFV) of the Reoviridae family

It is transmitted and carried to human beings by the bite of an infected Rocky Mountain wood tick (Dermacentor andersoni).

Colorado tick fever symptoms

The disease typically starts 3–6 days after tick bite. The characteristic feature is the “saddleback” fever pattern – fever appears in two phases:

  • 1. Initial stage: acute high fever, chills, headache, body pain, pain behind the eyes.
  • 2. Brief respite: fever abates for a day or two, with a false impression of recovery.
  • 3. Second stage: fever recovers with similar or even more severe symptoms.

Other frequent complaints are:

  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Weakening and fatigue
  • Loss of appetite, nausea, occasional vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Rash (rare, but can occur in some)
  • The disease is typically self-limiting, but weakness and fatigue persist for weeks.

Complications

Encephalitis (brain inflammation)

Meningitis (inflammation of the lining around the brain)

Bleeding disorders or extremely low white blood cells/platelets

These are more common in children.

Diagnosis

Physicians suspect Colorado Tick Fever if:

The patient has recently been in tick-endemic mountain regions.

The pattern of fever (saddleback) is seen.

Blood tests can have decreased white blood cells and platelets.

Confirmation can be accomplished by using special viral tests in reference laboratories.

Prevention 

Avoid tick-infested areas during peak season (spring–summer).

Wear long sleeves, pants tucked into socks, and light-colored clothing to spot ticks easily.

Use insect repellents (DEET on skin, permethrin on clothes).

Do regular tick checks on your body, children, and pets after outdoor activities.

Remove ticks promptly and carefully with tweezers, pulling straight out.

  • Valuable in initial stages when fever arises suddenly with congestion and restlessness.

  • Sudden high fever with anxiety, restlessness, extreme weakness.
  • Small sips of water constantly, thirst for.
